Can I Tempt You? The Necklace That Made the Cover

Can I Tempt You? The Necklace That Made the Cover

Some pieces of Juliana jewelry are beautiful.

Some are unusual.

And every once in a while, there is one that has enough presence to make you stop and look twice.

So let me ask you...

Can I tempt you?

The Necklace That Made the Cover

This extraordinary Egyptian Revival necklace is one of those pieces that has stayed with me for years.

It is IIJJ#2775, a dramatic five-panel articulated necklace set with large, high-domed multicolor Lucite cabochons. The necklace measures approximately 16¼ inches, with the center section measuring about 3 x 1.9 inches.

But its measurements really don't tell the story.

This is the necklace that appears on the cover of Juliana Jewelry – The Last Generation, the book Paula Knutson and I wrote about DeLizza & Elster jewelry.

It is also shown inside the book on page 208.

Of all the pieces we could have chosen for the cover, this was the one.

Those Cabochons

The first thing that catches your eye is the color.

Large domed Lucite stones rise from the elaborate metalwork in a mixture of rich jewel tones. Each panel has its own personality, yet together they create that unmistakable bold, theatrical look that makes the best Juliana jewelry so much fun to collect.

And because the five sections are articulated, the necklace doesn't simply sit across the neckline. It moves.

That combination of scale, color and movement gives it a presence that photographs can only partly capture.

The Collector Question

This isn't an everyday jewelry purchase.

And that is really the point of Can I Tempt You?

This series isn't going to be about ordinary pieces that happen to be for sale. It is about the jewelry that makes a collector stop and start negotiating with herself.

Do I already have something like it?

Will I ever find another one?

Do I really need it?

And then, perhaps the most dangerous question of all:

What if someone else buys it first?

For a collector of Juliana, this necklace has something else going for it as well. It isn't simply an impressive piece of DeLizza & Elster jewelry. It has become part of the documented history of the jewelry through the book and the Is It Juliana Jewelry database.

So... Can I Tempt You?

A dramatic Egyptian Revival design.

Five articulated panels.

Those wonderful oversized Lucite cabochons.

IIJJ#2775.

And, of course, the necklace that made the cover.

Can I tempt you?
